The following are photos on the way to the Town of Bajna and people from the area who showed up for the festival. The photos were taken as the groups were lining up in preparation for the march up on Main Street from the square.

Once they returned there were tables set up, fragrant food cooking and a stage was ready for music and dancing into the night.

Although I did not stay for the festivities, I hope you'll enjoy the visual presentation of the participants. Remember, photos will enlarge if you click on them.

Sándor-Metternich kastély, Bajna

Az 1741-ben épült barokk épület mai klasszicista formáját Hild József tervei alapján 1834-ben nyerte el. A kastélyt gróf Sándor Móric, a legendás "ördöglovas" építtette.

Az épület aranykorában gazdag freskókkal, tükrökkel, aranyozott díszekkel volt berendezve. A kastélyhoz tartozó uradalmi istálló, Sándor gróf világhírűvé vált ménesének szálláshelye volt. Az egykor pompázó szépségű, húszholdas parkra ma már csak néhány szétszórtan álló idős fa emlékeztet.

Sándor-Metternich Mansion (kastély), Bajna

The current Classical form of this originally Baroque building erected in 1741 was designed by József Hild in 1834. The mansion was commissioned by Count Móric Sándor, the legendary 'devil's rider'.

In its heyday the building was ornamented with murals, mirrors and gold-plated decoration. The stables belonging to the mansion housed Count Sándor's world-famous horse herd. A few scattered old trees remind us of the beauty of what was once 20 acres of splendid parkland.

Can be visited upon prior arrangement.

A település Budapesttől nyugati irányban kb. 45 km-re, egy képzeletbeli észak-dél vonalon Esztergom és Tatabánya között, a Gerecse keleti szélén található.

The settlement is located 45 km west of Budapesttől, along the eastern edge of the Gerecse mountain chain (on an imaginary north-to-south line it would fall between the cities of Esztergom and Tatabánya).

A 2000 lelket számláló Bajna írott történelme a 11. századig vezethető vissza, hiszen már 1087-ben egyházashely volt. Templomát 1484-ben építették, egy hajóval, gótikus stílusban, majd 1880-ban Simor János esztergomi hercegprímás jóvoltából kereszthajóval és két mellékhajóval bővült. Figyelemre méltó a falba illesztett faragott gótikus szentségfülkéje és bélletes kapuja. Egyébként Simor János építtette az iskolát is a szeretett híveinek.

The town of 2000 has a written history dating back to the 11th century and as long ago as 1087 it was a noted Christian settlement. Its church was built in 1484 in Gothic style with a single nave. In 1880, thanks to Janos Simor of the Esztergom diocese, it was expanded by a cross nave and two side naves. Items of note in the structure are the hand carved Gothic sacramental cabinet inserted into the wall and the gate. The school was also commissioned by Janos Simor for his beloved parishioners.
A közeli csimai kálvária egy török időkben elpusztult falu temploma helyén emelkedik, ösi vörösmárvány kereszttel.

The nearby Csima Calvary marks the place of a town that was destroyed during the Turkish occupation. It is what remains of the old church - the stations of the cross with an ancient red marble cross.

Bajna hírét azonban mégsem ez keltette, hanem az ún. Sándor-Metternich-kastély. A 19. század harmincas éveiben élt Sándor Móricot öntörvényű, hirtelen haragú embernek tartották, aki fogadásból még a kastély erkélyéről is leugratott a lovával. A ló belepusztult a mutatványba, Sándort viszont még most is ördöglovasként emlegetik a bajnaiak. A gróf a szerelmének, a hírhedt kancellár lányának, Metternich Leontinának építtette át Bajnán az ősi családi fészket, a bajnai kastélyt a hires Hild József tervei alapján.

A II. világháború után

Az államosítást követően szükséglakásként, téesz-raktárként használták. A belső terek tönkrementek, a mobíliák megsemmisültek. A parkot országúttal vágták ketté, gépállomást telepítettek bele, egy részét pártház céljára választották le. A téesz a kastélyból az 1970-es évek elején kiköltözött, de a gépállomást tovább használta.

The building had been renovated by the state and its exterior had regained some of its former grandeur.

Below is the Roman Catholic church in the center of town. It is the church my parents were married in on June 6, 1948. It is also the location where both my brother and I received our first communion.
